This session will address questions directors may have about creating a successful choral program, when they were originally tooled to be an instrumental music teacher. This session will also provide strategies for enhancing your instrumental ensemble while developing a choral music program in tandem.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Paul Shepherd

A native of Denver, CO, Paul Shepherd is currently in his 17th year of teaching and is the General Music Teacher at Highland Hills Middle School in Georgetown, IN. Mr. Shepherd also serves as the Assistant Band Director, Director of the 7th Grade Women’s Choir and Percussion Ensemble. In addition to his duties at the middle school, he assists as the Orchestra Winds/Assistant Director of the Floyd Central Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Shepherd earned his Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music Performance with an emphasis in instrumental conducting from the University of Louisville. While at the U of L, he studied conducting with Dr. Frederick Speck and saxophone with Michael Tracy and John S. Moore. In 2012 Mr. Shepherd received his National Board Teacher Certification.

Prior to his position at Highland Hills Middle School, he was the band director at Ballard High School in Louisville, KY. Under his direction the bands always received distinguished ratings at regional festivals, as well as KMEA District and State Band Assessments. Both the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band had the distinct honor of performing at the 2015 KMEA In-Service Conference. In 2015 the BHS Wind Ensemble was also chosen to perform at the Music for All: National Concert Band Festival.

Recently, Mr. Shepherd was selected to represent Kentucky in the 20th annual “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” issue of School Band and Orchestra Magazine. In 2014 Mr. Shepherd was selected as the KMEA District 12 High School Music Teacher of the Year. He also received this honor in 2009 as the KMEA Fifth District High School Music Teacher of the Year. Mr. Shepherd has been named a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction and has been selected to Who's Who Among American Teachers. His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA).

Mr. Shepherd currently resides in Lanesville, IN with his wife of 16 years, Amy, and their five children Reidona, Nathan, Joshua, Elijah and Levi.
